Amorgos does not have an airport. Access is by ferry from Piraeus, with daily routes, especially during the tourist season. The journey takes about 6 to 8 hours, depending on the type of ship and stops.

Amorgos has two main ports: Katapola, which serves most ships and is located in the center of the island, and Aegiali in the north, which is also an important tourist hub. Visitors can choose the port that best suits their accommodation and ferry schedule.

Chora

The Chora of Amorgos is a living picture of traditional Cycladic architecture. Narrow alleys, white houses with colorful shutters, blooming courtyards, and quaint cafes create a magical scene. Points of interest include the village square, the historic churches of Panoxori and Agia Triada, and the Byzantine Monastery of Saint John the Theologian.

Katapola

The island’s main port, Katapola, is also a traditional settlement with a calm pace and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can stroll the alleys, enjoy local flavors at tavernas by the sea, and start hiking excursions to the archaeological site of ancient Minoa.

Amorgos has a good road network connecting main points such as Chora, Katapola, Aegiali, and surrounding settlements. Though distances are relatively short, the island’s mountainous character makes some routes more challenging.

Transportation is mainly served by rental cars and motorcycles, the most practical options for full freedom of movement. Local buses operate frequent routes, especially in summer, covering major paths. Alternatively, taxis are also available.

Agia Anna

The most famous beach of Amorgos lies right below the imposing Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. In this small cove, with its homonym chapel, crystal-clear waters, and stunning natural landscape of rocks and sand, iconic scenes from the film The Big Blue were shot. The beach is particularly popular for diving and snorkeling thanks to the excellent water clarity and seabed morphology. It is 3 kilometers from Chora.

Mouros

Located in the southern part of Amorgos, Mouros stands out for its deep, pristine waters and impressive steep cliffs surrounding it. Access requires a short but steep descent via a path of about 10 minutes, rewarded by the impressive beauty of the scenery. Although unorganized, a small tavern operates in the area, covering basic visitors’ needs and offering refreshment and rest after swimming.

Maltezi

Maltezi is one of the most beautiful beaches of Amorgos, with golden fine sand and calm turquoise waters. It lies northwest of Katapola and is an ideal refuge during meltemi winds, as it is protected from the winds. The beach is relatively organized, with a beach bar and a limited number of sunbeds. Access is easy by boat from Katapola, with departures every 30 or 60 minutes, and there is also a trail from the village Xylokeratidi for those choosing to walk (about 20 minutes).

Aegiali

In the broader area of Aegiali lie some of the most tranquil beaches of Amorgos. Psili Ammos, with soft sand and shallow turquoise waters, offers a peaceful escape, while Levrosos is a small natural paradise with golden sand, emerald waters, and shade from salt bushes—ideal for those seeking isolation and relaxation. The beach is protected by surrounding hills, making it an excellent choice even on windy days. Access can be either by a trail starting from Tholaria or by boat from Aegiali. Additionally, just before Aegiali port on the road from Chora, there is Limenari, a small beach almost unknown to the wider public, attracting mainly those seeking absolute quiet.

Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

The ultimate symbol of Amorgos and one of Greece’s most impressive monasteries, the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa was built in the 11th century, literally clinging to a vertical cliff 300 meters above the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. Its architecture and spiritual aura are breathtaking. The climb, though demanding, with 350 steps up to the monastery’s courtyard, rewards visitors with unique views and an unforgettable experience.

Walk in the Venetian Castle
