Chora
The Chora of Folegandros is one of the most beautiful capitals in the Cyclades. Built on the edge of a 210-meter cliff, it perfectly blends Cycladic simplicity with the magic of the Aegean view. Whitewashed houses, cobblestone alleys, and lively squares lined with cafés and bars create a postcard-perfect setting.
The highlight is the Venetian Castle (dating back to 1215), a continuously inhabited medieval quarter. From the Church of Panagia, perched above the town, you can enjoy one of the most stunning sunsets in the Aegean. The uphill stone-paved path from Pounta Square leading there offers a truly scenic walk.
Ano Meria
Ano Meria, the island’s second main settlement, is a hymn to the traditional rural life of the Cyclades. It feels like an open-air museum, with dry-stone walls, terraced fields, and scattered “themonies”—traditional farmsteads with ovens, stables, and threshing floors. Here you will also find the Folegandros Eco-Museum, an authentic reconstruction of 19th-century island life and a must-visit for anyone wishing to discover the island’s cultural heritage.
Getting Around
Folegandros is small and easy to explore, with a well-maintained road network connecting Chora, Karavostasi, Ano Meria, and the main beaches. A public bus service operates regularly, while car, scooter, or ATV rentals offer greater freedom. From Karavostasi, small boats depart for the island’s most remote coves, including Chryssospilia and Katergo.
