The enchanting Hydra, one of the most iconic Greek islands, is a popular destination for both foreign and Greek visitors, mainly due to its proximity to Athens. The island has a rich naval tradition and history, reflected in every corner. In Hydra, there are no cars. Instead, you’ll find narrow cobbled streets, donkeys, stone pathways, and the clear blue sea.

How to get to Hydra​

The Piraeus - Hydra connection is available year-round with multiple ferry departures every day, with both conventional and high-speed ferries. The journey lasts between 1 hour and 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of ship.​ If you wish to reach Hydra from the Peloponnese, you can take a ferry from Ermioni, Porto Heli, or Methana.​

Hydra is an ideal starting point for island hopping in the Saronic Gulf, with frequent ferry connections to Aegina, Poros, and Spetses throughout the year, allowing visitors to easily explore the beauties of the area.

Hydra (town)​

Hydra is a living masterpiece, with its preserved architecture and the strict prohibition of motor vehicles, maintaining its charm intact. Built amphitheatrically around the harbor, it spreads over two rocky hills, filled with mansions and houses with red-tiled roofs and blue windows. Its picturesque harbor, with sailboats, small fishing boats, and speedboats, is full of life during the tourist season. The marble quay is constantly busy, with donkeys carrying supplies, visitors strolling through the narrow streets and enjoying their coffee by the sea.

Getting Around

In Hydra, visitors usually get around on foot, as the island is car-free. Donkeys are the traditional means of transportation. However, it is important to remember that animal rights organizations encourage visitors to consider the well-being of the donkeys and ensure that they are treated with the necessary respect before choosing to enjoy a ride.

The island, without buses or taxis, maintains its tranquility and authenticity, allowing visitors to experience a simple and peaceful daily life.

In the summer, small boats depart from the town, taking travelers to the island’s beaches.

Beaches in Hydra

The beaches of the Saronic Gulf are truly enchanting. With their calm sandy shores, crystal-clear waters, and pine trees reaching all the way to the sea, they create perfect conditions for moments of relaxation.

Spilia Beach​

A unique, rocky beach with crystal-clear, deep waters, located near the harbor of Hydra. It consists of stone slabs and steps that lead directly to the sea, offering easy access for a quick and refreshing swim. It is the perfect spot for those who love the vast blue without the sand.

Hydroneta Beach

A small, stone platform that seems to embrace the rocks, creating a unique scene next to the crystal-clear waters of Hydra. By descending the steps, you reach a platform ideal for sunbathing and refreshing dips in the pristine, deep waters.​

In the afternoon, Hydroneta transforms into one of the island’s most beautiful spots to enjoy

the sunset. It is located just a few meters beyond Spilia and is a favorite choice for those who love rocky beaches and relaxing moments by the sea.

Vlychos Beach​

An organized beach with small pebbles and crystal-clear waters, ideal for relaxation and swimming. It can be reached by excursion boats (only 5 minutes) or on foot in 40 minutes from the harbor by following the coastal road. In the area, you’ll find dining and accommodation options to enjoy your day without needing to venture far.

Bisti Beach​

A beautiful beach on the southern side of the island, with fine pebbles and turquoise waters.

Surrounded by a lush forest, it offers a unique natural landscape. Ideal for diving. Access is available via excursion boats, which operate regular routes daily.

Mandraki Beach​

An organized sandy beach, perfect for peaceful moments by the sea. It offers opportunities for water sports, making it an excellent destination for action lovers.

Agios Nikolaos Beach​

A lovely beach with pebbles and crystal-clear waters, surrounded by green slopes and the picturesque church of Agios Nikolaos. Located on the southwestern coast of the island, it is one of the largest beaches in Hydra. Organized and with a wonderful landscape, it is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Access is via excursion boats that operate regular routes daily.

Attractions - Activities in Hydra

Mansions​

When in Hydra, admire the imposing mansions of the 18th century, built during the island's prosperous period due to trade and shipping. These mansions belonged to the historic sea captains of the island and are closely linked to the island's glorious history. The buildings are three or four stories tall, imposing yet simple. Visit the Tombazis Mansion, which has hosted a branch of the Athens School of Fine Arts since 1936, the Tsamados Mansion, home to the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Lazaros Koundouriotis Mansion, which serves as a branch of the National Historical Museum.

Museum of History and Archives​

The Museum of History and Archives houses priceless treasures from the 1821 Revolution, along with important exhibits from the Balkan and World Wars. Don’t miss visiting the Historical Gallery, which includes works by major painters, as well as the archive of valuable manuscripts and documents from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Miaoulia Festival​

The Miaoulia Festival is the island’s grand celebration, held every year on the Saturday closest to June 21st. The highlight of the celebrations is a re-enactment of the 1821 Battle of Hydra, at which a replica Turkish frigate is burnt followed by a firework display.

Walk in the Chora​

Don’t miss a romantic walk through the picturesque streets of the Chora, one of the best-preserved traditional settlements in Greece, to admire the traditional architecture, the beautiful bougainvillea that adorn the landscape, and the bastions with cannons on both sides of the harbor, which once protected Hydra in earlier times.

Hiking​

With its mild climate, tradition, and natural beauty, Hydra is an ideal destination for hiking.

With over 80 kilometers of trails, the four main routes cover a variety of landscapes and ecosystems. The eastern side of the island offers a rocky landscape, while the western side is wooded and pine covered.​

A unique experience is the ascent to the Monastery of Prophet Elias. The trail lasts over an hour via winding paths and pine trees, leading to panoramic views from the top.
