Chora & Traditional Villages

Perched amphitheatrically with sweeping views of the Aegean, Chora is Ios’s cultural and historic heart. Its architecture embodies true Cycladic style: whitewashed homes with blue shutters, narrow cobblestone lanes, windmills, and chapels, all forming a captivating blend of tradition and vitality. Enjoy comfortable accommodation, restaurants, and cultural activities, and don’t miss the sunset view from the Square of the 12 Windmills.

Beyond Chora, traditional settlements like Epano Kampos, Psathi, and Mylopotas preserve the purity of Cycladic life in a quieter, more authentic atmosphere. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in local life, taste regional products, and experience a different side of Ios. These villages also serve as excellent starting points for hikes to historical monuments and natural landscapes.

Getting Around

Getting around Ios is easy and flexible, offering visitors a variety of options. Additionally, renting cars, scooters, or bicycles is very popular, allowing the freedom to explore more remote and scenic areas. For nature lovers and those seeking tranquility, hiking trails between traditional villages and natural landscapes provide an ideal way to experience the island authentically. Beaches in Ios

Ios boasts one of the most impressive coastlines in the Cyclades, with over 30 beaches, some organized and bustling, others remote, all featuring crystalline waters and natural beauty.

Mylopotas

The most popular and easily accessible is just 5 minutes from Chora. Organized with sunbeds, beach bars, watersports (kayak, SUP, diving), and youthful energy. Ideal for active, beachside fun.

Manganari

Perhaps the island’s most stunning beach, with calm, shallow waters and fine golden sand. An exotic paradise of four bays, offering choices for every visitor. Though 25 km from Chora, it rewards the journey handsomely.

Koumbara

Near the port, this beach combines convenience and charm with beach bars, sunbeds, and taverns. It’s especially popular at sunset.

Agia Theodoti

One of the loveliest beaches on northeastern Ios. A sheltered, lesserdeveloped natural setting with a wide sandy shore and turquoise waters. A small beachside tavern serves local flavors under refreshing shade. Named after a nearby hilltop chapel.

Kalamos & Loretzina

Secluded and tranquil, perfect for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation off the beaten path. Great for hiking, exploration, and unique landscapes.

Psathi

A small hidden paradise on the eastern side of the island, with unspoiled landscape and wild beauty. Ideal for isolation, featuring clear waters and natural shade.

Attractions & Activities in Ios

Skaros Archaeological Site

One of the Aegean’s most important prehistoric settlements exceptionally preserved and visitorfriendly. Built amphitheatrically on a hill in concentric terraces, Skaros dates back earlier than the famous prehistoric site at Akrotiri, Santorini, offering invaluable insight into one of Europe’s earliest organized societies.

Museums & Culture

Ios Archaeological Museum, housing finds from Skaros and the ancient cemetery, covering periods from the Early Cycladic to Roman era.

Yiannis Gaitis Museum, celebrating the famed Greek painter and friend of the island, showcasing his work alongside other modernist artists.

JeanMarie Drot Museum of Modern Art in Mylopotas—housed in the home of the French philhellene painter—featuring paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and furniture that merge modern art with Greek light and the Aegean.

The Tomb of Homer

At the northern tip of Ios, in the area called Plakoto, according to tradition, lies the tomb of Homer. The site offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and exudes a sense of myth and contemplation, making it ideal for those seeking cultural interest and natural beauty.

Panagia Gremiotissa

With reportedly 365 churches and chapels on the island, one for each day of the year, this is the most famous. It stands majestically at the highest point of Chora, perched on a cliff, offering breathtaking views of Sifnos and Santorini, especially at sunset. A mustsee.

OpenAir Theatre “Odysseas Elytis”

Built at Tsoukalaria, one of the poet’s favorite spots, this marble amphitheater seats up to 1,100 and echoes the design of ancient Sicilian theaters by architect Peter Haupt. The sunset views over the harbor and Mylopotas from here are unforgettable.

Discover Ios Through Its Trails

The island’s traditional paths are deeply entwined with its history and culture. For centuries, they served as the main road network, and today they offer authentic naturewalk experiences. Bordered by drystone walls built without mortar—craft passed down through generations—they are recognized by UNESCO (2003) as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Routes such as Chora–Mylopotas, Chora–Skaros, and Agia Theodoti–Paleokastrou beach, lead to stunning landscapes. For a safer and more informative hike, a local guide is recommended.
