Myrina – The Capital of Limnos

Myrina, the picturesque capital of Limnos, is a town that harmoniously combines history with a relaxed island rhythm. From Romeikos Gialos, the scenery unfolds with grand houses, stone alleys, and traditional neighborhoods that reflect the influences of wealthy Lemnian families from Egypt and the long-standing presence of residents on the island.

At the top of the town stands the imposing castle of Myrina, built in the 12th century by the Byzantine Emperor Komnenos and later reinforced by the Venetians. The view from there is unique, while the surrounding neighborhoods host shops with handmade products, taverns, cafes, and bars. The Archaeological Museum and the Cathedral of Limnos complete the cultural experience for those who love history and the arts.

With its beautiful coastline and an atmosphere balancing tradition and modernity, Myrina is the ideal base to explore every corner of Limnos.

Poliochni

Poliochni, one of the most important prehistoric settlements in the Aegean, offers a unique journey into the past. Its historical periods are represented through a color code – blue, green, red, and yellow – showing the different phases of the settlement’s development. Founded at the end of the 4th millennium to the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC in the Vroskopos Bay, Poliochni reveals the evolution of architecture and culture, offering an unparalleled historical discovery experience. After visiting the archaeological site, the nearby Kokkinovrachos beach is the perfect choice to refresh and relax.

Traditional Villages

Limnos stands out for its traditional villages, authentic stone masterpieces. From Kontopouli and Romanos to Kontias and Katalakos, stone dominates every corner: in houses, carved stonework, fences, and old rural constructions that tell stories of everyday life. Each village is a monument to folk architecture and Aegean tradition, where art and functionality are uniquely combined.

Getting Around

Limnos, with its relatively small distances, is easily accessible. The bus network connects Myrina with the main villages and beaches. For more comfort and freedom, renting a car, scooter, or bicycle is ideal.

One of the most popular beaches, Thanos stretches with white sand and shallow, clear waters beside the eponymous village. On the left side of the beach stands an impressive rock of volcanic origin. Ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts, it offers a relaxed summer atmosphere.

Keros

Keros Beach is perfect for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. With white sand, shallow turquoise waters, and a setting reminiscent of a small Caribbean Bay, it is located within a protected Natura 2000 area. Steady winds create excellent conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Riha Nera

As the name suggests, Riha Nera (Shallow Waters) is ideal for families with young children. The calm, shallow waters and natural shade from tamarisk trees provide comfort and safety, while its proximity to Myrina makes it easily accessible.

Attractions & Activities in Limnos

Limnos is a land full of myths, rare landscapes, ancient mysteries, and experiences unique to the Aegean. From sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara to deer roaming freely in a medieval castle, the island reveals itself piece by piece with each visit.

Myrina Castle

The imposing castle of Myrina, built by Andronikos I Komnenos in the 12th century, rises dramatically over the rocky peninsula. Its strong walls and view over the Aegean create a unique atmosphere of historical grandeur. The castle is also known for the deer living freely within its walls, around 50 to 70, descendants of three animals donated to Limnos in the 1970s. Encountering them is one of the island’s most unique experiences.

Archaeological Museum of Limnos

In Myrina, the Archaeological Museum houses artifacts from the Chalcolithic period to Roman times. Vases, inscriptions, tools, and everyday objects tell the continuous history of an island that was significant in the ancient world.

Ancient Hephaestia and the Sanctuary of the Cabeiri

The myth tells that Zeus, after an argument with Hera, threw their son Hephaestus from Olympus, and landed in Limnos with a broken leg. The locals cared for him, and to show his gratitude, he taught them metalworking skills and had a daughter with the nymph Cabeiro.Today, this myth comes alive at the island’s two most famous archaeological sites.

Hephaestia was one of the most important cities of Limnos during the 5th and 4th centuries BC, dedicated to its patron, Hephaestus. The archaeological site features the sanctuary of the goddess Lemnia and the restored theater of the Hellenistic-Roman period. At the nearby Sanctuary of the Cabeiri, the mysterious Cabeirian Mysteries were performed, rituals dedicated to the regeneration of nature and to Hephaestus. Visiting both sites combines myth, ancient history, and landscapes of unparalleled beauty.

Pachies Ammoudes

One of Greece’s most extraordinary landscapes, Pachies Ammoudes covers approximately 70 acres near the village of Katalakos. White lilies and strong winds create a "Greek Sahara," a setting more reminiscent of a desert than an Aegean island. Here, visitors can try sandboarding or simply wander through the exotic landscape. A refreshing swim in the nearby Gomati perfectly completes the experience.

The Wetlands of Alyki

In northern Limnos lies one of the Aegean’s most important wetlands, part of the NATURA 2000 network. The three lakes – Alyki, Hortarolimni, and Asprolimni – create a landscape of unique beauty and serve as a sanctuary for rare and migratory birds. Alyki, the largest, connects to the sea through a narrow channel and produces high-quality salt during the summer drought. Here, the largest seasonal concentration of flamingos in Greece can be observed – an unforgettable spectacle.

Faraklo Geological Park

North, beyond Propouli, lies Faraklo: impressive spherical, smooth volcanic formations in shades of yellow and red. Their shape is the result of lava meeting the sea, creating a scene reminiscent of another planet. Visiting this "lunar" landscape is an experience that only Limnos can offer.
