Oinoussa Town

Oinoussa Town, built amphitheatrically around the port, exudes an aristocratic charm that reflects the island’s maritime tradition. Paved streets, stone houses with tiled roofs, picturesque balconies, and the mansions of shipowners and captains unfold among lovely green corners, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors, with its impressive frescoes and rich decoration, as well as the Maritime Museum, which tells the story of the captains and the maritime heritage of Oinousses.

At the entrance of the port stands the iconic bronze statue of the Oinoussian Mermaid, holding a crown and a sailing ship in her left hand, created by sculptor Maria Papakonstantinou. Nearby, the statue of the Oinoussian Mother bids farewell to her children as they embark on distant voyages.

Following the quay to the Naftosini Square, you will encounter the Monument to the Unknown Sailor, the first statue in Greece dedicated to sailors lost at sea.

Due to its small size, Oinoussa is easily explored on foot. However, with a car or scooter, you can discover all the island’s beaches, as the compact but well-maintained road network circles the entire island.
