Serifos

Serifos

Serifos stands out for its wild, natural beauty, with steep cliffs descending into deep blue coves. Outside the picturesque Chora, the island remains quiet and authentic, with only a few traces of its old mining history and the strong wind dominating the landscape. Ideal for those seeking rest and tranquility, Serifos remains a destination far from the crowds.

How to get to Serifos

Serifos has daily ferry connections to Piraeus, with ferries that reach the island in about 4 hours, as well as high-speed ferries that make the journey in about 2 hours. The frequency of routes varies depending on the season.

Livadi

Livadi is the port and the largest town of Serifos, with a modern marina that attracts tourists with boats. Full of tavernas and bars, it offers the perfect destination for entertainment and relaxation. Its liveliness, combined with its proximity to excellent beaches, makes it the ideal base for exploring the island.

Chora (Serifos)

Chora is a small town that stretches across the steep hillsides above Livadi, making it one of the most striking and highest capitals in the Cyclades. In the central square stands the beautiful neoclassical Τown Ηall and the Church of Agios Athanasios with its blue dome. From the square, narrow streets and stairs lead upwards to the ancient acropolis and the few ruins of the 15th-century Venetian castle, offering breathtaking views of the sea and Sifnos. Just below the hilltop, the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos is carved into the rock. According to tradition, it was built on the ruins of the ancient temple of Athena.

Getting Around

To get around the island, you can use the local buses, which connect the beaches and villages through frequent routes. On the island, you will also find options to rent a car or scooter. Alternatively, you can call a taxi.

Beaches in Serifos

Serifos is an island with beaches that cater to every preference. From rocky shores and beaches with fine pebbles to golden sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters.

Psili Ammos

Psili Ammos is one of the busiest beaches on the island. As the name suggests, fine golden sand covers the entire coast. Natural shade from trees adds to the relaxed atmosphere, offering comfort on hot summer days. In the area, you will find seaside tavernas with many food options. In 2003, it was voted "Best Beach in Europe" by the Sunday Times.

Agios Sostis

The most impressive beach on the island, Agios Sostis, stretches along a sandy strip of land that ends in a cape with the small church of Agios Sostis. The beach has pebbles and golden sand, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, offering amazing views of the small island of Vou. Access is by road and then a short path.

Sykamia

Sykamia is one of the best beaches on the island, which can be reached either by road (which turns into a dirt road for the last 500 meters) or by a stunning path from Galani. The beach is covered with pebbles and sand.

Koutalas Bay

The best beaches on the southern coast are large and sandy. Three of them share the large, protected bay of Koutalas. The first you meet is Vayia, a crescent-shaped beach with golden sand, pebbles, and emerald-clear waters. The beach has umbrellas and sunbeds. A little further after Vayia, you will encounter Ganema, one of the largest beaches in Serifos, with tamarisks and green waters. The third beach of the bay, after Vagia and Ganema, is Koutalas, a beach covered in pebbles that leads to a sandy shore. The landscape is truly beautiful, as here you can see the remains of the old mining facilities that once operated in the area.

Archaeological Museum

This small museum in Serifos Town exhibits unique finds, mainly from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, discovered during excavations at the castle and other sites on the island. Notable items include a series of headless statues and a collection of amphorae.

The Monastery of Taxiarches

In the northern part of the island, near Platis Gialos beach, it’s well worth visiting the Monastery of Taxiarches, built in 1572 and dedicated to Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The monastery originally had a fortress-like design, featuring high walls and battlements constructed to defend against pirates and other invaders. Unfortunately, these defensive features have not survived to the present day.
