How to Get to Sifnos

Sifnos has daily ferry connections to Piraeus, with ships reaching the island in about 5 hours, and high-speed ferries making the journey in about 2.5 hours. The frequency of the ferry schedules varies depending on the season.

Kamares

The island’s port, surrounded by steep cliffs, exudes a relaxing holiday atmosphere, with seaside cafes, tavernas, and shops, as well as a variety of accommodations. The large and beautiful beach of Kamares has a sandy shore, pristine vegetation, reed beds, and sand dunes with "sand lilies," which bloom in August.

Apollonia

Apollonia is the island’s capital and is named after the god Apollo. With its narrow streets and churches, it is full of life from morning until night. On the famous main pedestrian street of Apollonia, which crosses the heart of the village, you will find restaurants offering local and international flavors, bars, and cafes to enjoy your food or drink. The main road passes through the center, but you can park in the free parking area below the village and walk through the narrow alleys.

Artemonas

Artemonas, the largest village on Sifnos, is named after the goddess Artemis. It is located just 1.5 kilometers north of Apollonia and is a true gem of the island. Artemonas is famous for its neoclassical mansions and cobbled streets. From the area of the windmills, known as ’Bella Vista’, you can admire the wonderful view of Apollonia, the Castle, the surrounding islands, and the Aegean Sea.

Getting Around

To get around the island, you can use the local buses, which frequently connect Kamares with Apollonia and Artemonas, as well as the other villages and places of special interest. On the island, you will also find many options to rent a car or scooter. Alternatively, you can call a taxi.

Platis Gialos Beach

Known for its golden sandy beach and turquoise waters, it is one of the largest beaches on the island. Organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and many options for water sports, it is ideal for both adventure and relaxation. At the beach, you will find tavernas and cafes offering fresh seafood and local delicacies.

Vathi Beach

This beach, in a picturesque bay with stunning turquoise waters, is perfect for those seeking tranquility and relaxation. The shallow waters make it ideal for families with young children. The surrounding landscape with olive trees and traditional Cycladic architecture enhances the beautiful atmosphere of the beach, while the local tavernas near the port offer excellent local dishes.

Chrysopigi Beach

With crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, Chrysopigi is famous for its natural beauty and the Monastery of Chrysopigi. The combination of rocks and the monastery creates an impressive landscape, perfect for photos. Explore the beach or enjoy the wonderful view from the trails around the area.

The acropolis and village of Kastro

A walk through the Kastro is like a journey through time. In the old capital of Sifnos, the Middle Ages meets Cycladic architecture, creating a unique setting. The picturesque settlement, with its low entrance gates that once protected the inhabitants from pirate raids, is perfect for wandering. Walk through the winding stone alleys, between traditional houses and scattered marble sarcophagi, and reach the ancient acropolis, where the view of the vast blue Aegean will mesmerize you.

Ancient Towers

Explore the impressive ancient towers of Sifnos, a network of circular fortification structures (6th – 3rd century BC) on hilltops and slopes, which served as a signal exchange system using mirrors or smoke. Today, 77 surviving towers have been recorded across the island. It is worth visiting the White Tower at Pantocratora, the Black Tower at Exambela, and the Tower at Kade on the road to Vathi. Since 2003, and every year, on the eve of Pentecost, dozens of volunteers revive the communication system, lighting the beacons.

Experience the Authentic Festivals of Sifnos

With 237 churches and monasteries, Sifnos holds the record in the Cyclades for festivals, which are accompanied by feasts and tradition. Each festival is organized and financed by a local resident, known as the "panigyras," as a sign of gratitude to the saint. The largest festival of all is that of the island's patron saint, Panagia Chrysopigi, which is celebrated on Ascension Day, attended by many people from all over the island and beyond.
