Sikinos

Sikinos

Sikinos, one of the smallest and most unspoiled islands of the Cyclades, is a hymn to authenticity and the wild beauty of the Aegean. Nestled between Folegandros and Ios, it stands proud in the dazzling light, where rock meets sea and tranquility finds its purest form. Sikinos remains true to its essence, a haven for travelers seeking simplicity, nature, and tradition.

How to Get to Sikinos

By Sea

Sikinos is connected by ferry to Piraeus and the nearby islands of Ios, Folegandros, and Santorini, with frequent routes especially during the summer months. The journey from Piraeus takes about 8 to 10 hours, depending on the itinerary and stops.

The port of Alopronia lies in a picturesque bay with a sandy beach, tavernas, and cafés that welcome you with genuine island hospitality.

Chora

The Chora of Sikinos is among the most beautiful in the Cyclades. Built 280 meters above the sea, it dramatically crowns the edge of a sheer cliff. It consists of two parts, the Kastro and the Chorio, both preserving their traditional Cycladic charm.

Whitewashed alleys, stone mansions, windmills, bougainvilleas, and small chapels create a scene that feels timeless. At the heart of the settlement stands the Church of Pantanassa (1787), with its blue dome, gilded wooden iconostasis, and exquisite icons of the Cretan School. It is also one of the most stunning spots to watch the sunset over the Aegean.

Getting Around

Sikinos is small and easy to explore. A local bus connects Alopronia with Chora and the main beaches, while car and scooter rentals offer more freedom. The island’s well-marked trails are perfect for hiking, and boats organize day trips to remote coves and beaches.

Beaches in Sikinos

Sikinos offers a collection of small, authentic beaches that captivate visitors with their serenity and crystal-clear waters. Some are accessible by road, others only by boat or hiking trail, each one a hidden gem.

Alopronia

The island’s main and most popular beach, located right by the port. A wide sandy shore with natural shade from tamarisks, umbrellas, and shallow, clear waters. Ideal for families.

Agios Georgios

The island’s most popular bay, with golden sand, fine pebbles, and a seaside taverna. The view of the islet of Avolada just offshore is enchanting.

Dialiskari

A small, quiet beach of wild natural beauty with translucent turquoise waters. Access is via a dirt road.

Agios Panteleimonas

A romantic cove with pebbles, a small cave offering natural shade, and crystal-clear waters. You can reach it by boat or on foot from Alopronia.

Santorinaika

Two small coves with sand and pebbles, surrounded by rocks and turquoise waters. Access is via a path from Agios Panteleimonas. The beach takes its name from the Santorinian boats that once came here to load goods from Sikinos.

Sights & Activities in Sikinos

Hiking Trails

Follow the scenic trails that link Chora with the beaches and countryside chapels, crossing stone terraces, Byzantine churches, and landscapes of pristine simplicity.

Boat Trip Around the Island

Explore secluded beaches such as Karas, Malta, and Ai Giannis, and discover the magnificent Mavri Spilia (Black Cave) below the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, one of the largest sea caves in the Cyclades.

Panagia Pantohara

The chapel of Odysseas Elytis, built in 2011 in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning poet, gazes over the Aegean with moving simplicity, a place where sky and light become poetry.

Wine Tourism

Visit the island’s eco-friendly winery, which operates entirely on renewable energy and revives the ancient viticulture of Sikinos. Its terrace restaurant offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Cycladic islands.

Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi

Perched on the cliff above Chora, this historic fortified monastery (1690) is a striking complex with battlements, crypts, high walls, and secret passages — seemingly suspended between earth and sky. From its courtyard, the view over the endless Aegean is simply awe-inspiring.

Monastery of Episkopi

In the heart of the island’s countryside, Episkopi is Sikinos’s most significant monument. Originally a Roman mausoleum (3rd century AD), it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin in the 17th century. The complex includes underground crypts, chapels, monastic cells, and fragments of ancient marble sculptures — a fascinating journey through time.

Folklore Museum

Housed in a former olive press in Chorio, the Folklore Museum showcases the daily life and agricultural traditions of Sikinos through tools, utensils, and authentic artifacts from centuries past.
