How to get to Spetses
Spetses has a daily ferry connection with Piraeus via high-speed ferries that carry passengers only.
The journey takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on intermediate stops. During the trip, the boat approaches the ports of Poros, Hydra, and Ermioni, giving an opportunity for a brief introduction to other islands of the Saronic Gulf and Peloponnese.
Dapia and the neighborhoods of Spetses
Dapia, the new harbor, is the center of the island, full of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Wander through the quiet streets or follow the coastal road to discover the traditional mansions of the city, which highlight the historical heritage of Spetses.
East of Dapia, about 2 kilometers away, lies the area of Bitiza, where the Monastery of Saint Nicholas stands with its impressive, cobbled courtyard and majestic bell tower.
Continuing eastward, you will reach the Old Port, which reflects the island's prosperity during the 19th century. The area, with its traditional shipyards and lighthouse, retains the atmosphere of the past, while its nightlife is vibrant and full of energy. Restaurants, taverns, bars, and clubs offer unique moments of fun and enjoyment.
On the other side of Dapia lies the area of Kounoupitsa, a peaceful refuge for seaside walks. It is ideal for swimming and relaxing, with charming cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy food and drinks. Also nearby, the Bouboulina Museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of the island and the legendary female naval commander.
Getting Around
Cars are prohibited within the town, but getting around the island is easy and comfortable with many alternative options to explore its neighborhoods and beautiful beaches.
The most popular means of transportation are scooters and bicycles, with several shops offering rentals.
Taxis are also available for your transfers, as well as buses that operate during the tourist season, offering routes to popular destinations starting from the town of Spetses.
Sea taxis are available 24/7 and serve any point on the island upon telephone request or direct contact at the Dapia Harbor, which is their permanent anchorage.
Additionally, traditional horse-drawn carriages transport visitors to the main spots of the town from morning until evening, especially during the tourist season.
Lastly, traditional boats run routes to the island's popular beaches, departing from Dapia Harbor from morning until sunset.
Beaches in Spetses
The beaches of the Saronic Gulf are truly enchanting, with their tranquility and beauty. The peaceful sandy shores, crystal-clear and serene waters, along with pine trees reaching the sea, create the perfect setting for relaxation and enjoyment.
Agioi Anargyroi Beach
The largest beach on the island, with a combination of sand and pebbles, is famous for its deep, crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for water sports. It is located 12 km west of Dapia and is well-organized, offering all amenities.
Zogeria Beach
An idyllic natural bay on the northern side of the island, full of pine trees, olive trees, and crystal-clear waters. The beach is organized and ideal for those seeking tranquility, with all amenities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, and a taverna. For many, it is considered the best beach on the island. Access is also available by caique from Dapia’s port.
Agia Marina Beach
The most cosmopolitan and busiest beach is just 10 minutes from Dapia. It is well-organized with a beach bar, and directly opposite lies the private island of Spetsopoula, owned by the Niarchos family.
Agia Paraskevi Beach
One of the most popular beaches on the island, famous for its turquoise waters and its picturesque little church. It is surrounded by a pine forest that provides natural shade, is organized with a small bar, and is located 12 km west of Dapia. Access is available by bus or caique.
Xylokeriza Beach
A large beach on the southern side of the island with white pebbles, pine trees, and emerald waters. Although it is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, it retains its serene and untouched beauty.
Sights & Activities in Spetses
Bouboulina Museum
The Bouboulina Museum, housed in her historic family mansion, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the life and actions of the legendary female naval commander of the Greek War of Independence. The museum exhibits rare 1821 artifacts, such as weapons, paintings, letters, personal items, and furniture, that capture the era and Bouboulina’s contribution to the War of Independence.
Spetses Museum
The Spetses Museum, housed in the historic mansion of Hatzigiannis-Mexis, the first governor of the island, is one of the island’s most significant cultural venues. Its collections include valuable artifacts, such as the Flag of the War of Independence, as well as the ossuary containing the bones of Laskarina Bouboulina.
“Armata”
The “Armata” is one of the most important cultural and historical events of Spetses, held annually on the second weekend of September. The event includes a re-enactment of the Battle of Spetses, culminating in the impressive burning of a replica of the Turkish flagship at the port, accompanied by fireworks and celebratory activities. It is a unique experience that honors the island’s historical heritage.
