Zakynthos
Zakynthos
At the southernmost tip of the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos unfolds its full beauty: from lush green hills and olive groves to sandy beaches and turquoise waters that captivate visitors at first sight. The Venetians named it “Fiore di Levante” — the Flower of the East — praising the colors, vegetation, and fragrances that fill every corner of the island.
What truly makes it stand out is the coexistence of this natural beauty with a vibrant cultural tradition, from picturesque villages and historic monuments to the iconic Navagio Beach, which leaves an indelible impression on every visitor.

The distance from Athens to Kyllini is about 250 km (approximately 3–3.5 hours by car), and regular intercity bus services provide easy access to the port.
Zakynthos Town
Zakynthos Town is the island’s capital, built amphitheatrically around the port. It preserves strong elements of Ionian architecture, with squares, arches, and neoclassical buildings, while Solomos Square dominates its central area. The seaside promenade is ideal for leisurely walks and for discovering the island’s history and culture.
The Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians Museum, located in the historic St. Mark’s Square, is an important cultural center. Also prominent in the town is the Church of Saint Dionysios, the island’s patron saint, where his relics are kept; it constitutes a central religious and cultural landmark.
The district of Bochali, above the town, combines history with panoramic views. The Venetian Castle stands there, and the Naval and Historical Museum of Zakynthos operates in the area. On the nearby Strani Hill, Dionysios Solomos wrote the “Hymn to Liberty,” whose verses later formed the basis of the Greek national anthem, granting the island international cultural recognition.
Traditional Villages of Zakynthos
Beyond the capital, Zakynthos reveals its authentic character through its picturesque villages. In the southwestern part of the island, Keri stands out for its natural landscapes and traditional atmosphere, while directly opposite, the Mizithres rocks offer impressive views and an ideal backdrop for seaside photography.
In the northern part, Volimes is known for its local handicrafts, including the production of honey, olive oil, and other traditional goods. Villages such as Koiliomenos and Loucha preserve traditional stone-built houses, cobbled streets, and authentic island life.
Areas such as Kampi, Katastari, and Ano Gerakari offer unique views of the Ionian Sea and of coves such as Schiza and Alykes. Their rich natural surroundings create ideal trails for hiking, walking, and seeking peaceful moments away from crowded tourist spots.
Getting Around
Zakynthos has a well-developed road network connecting the main settlements and beaches. Renting a car or motorcycle is considered essential for comfortably exploring the island, especially the western and northern coasts.
Boat excursions also provide access to sea caves, secluded beaches, and impressive rock formations.
Beaches in Zakynthos
The beaches of Zakynthos are among the most impressive in Greece, thanks to the island’s unique geomorphology and the exotic hues of its waters. From calm sandy bays with shallow waters to imposing shores with steep white cliffs, Zakynthos offers a wide variety of options to suit every travel preference.
Navagio Beach
The island’s most iconic beach and one of the most recognizable worldwide. It is surrounded by imposing vertical white cliffs and is home to the wreck of the ship Panagiotis, which gives the landscape its unique character. The waters are intensely turquoise, and access is exclusively by boat from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos, or Zakynthos Town.
Navagio Beach is temporarily closed for maintenance, and access is prohibited.
Gerakas
One of the island’s most beautiful beaches, stretching along a large expanse of golden sand at the southernmost tip of Zakynthos, and part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. It is an important nesting site for the sea turtle Caretta caretta. Human intervention is limited, offering an authentic experience in contact with nature. On the left side of the beach, natural clay is available, ideal for exfoliation.
Porto Limnionas
Porto Limnionas is a closed, rocky cove on the western side of Zakynthos, with crystal-clear, deep waters and a wild, imposing landscape. It is not a traditional sandy beach but a horseshoe-shaped rocky inlet, ideal for diving, swimming, and exploring its many caves.
Banana Beach
The largest beach on the island, fully organized and offering water sports facilities. It combines a lively summer atmosphere with clean waters and an extensive shoreline, providing options for both relaxation and activities.
Xigia
A small beach known for the therapeutic properties of its waters due to sulfur springs emerging from the rocks. The waters are turquoise and are considered beneficial for the skin, offering a unique swimming experience.
Porto Vromi
Porto Vromi is unique, as it features two beaches within a beautiful bay. The narrow, winding coves are quite distant from each other and offer fine pebbles alternating with sand, while the clear turquoise waters make swimming especially enjoyable. On one beach, you can rent a canoe or pedal boat to explore nearby caves, while on the other, a sea taxi takes you directly to the iconic Navagio for an unforgettable excursion.
Porto Zoro
This beach was named Porto Azzuro by the Italians because of the intense blue of its waters, and today it is known as Porto Zoro. It is an excellent choice for families, couples, or large groups, thanks to the tavernas and beach bars located along the coast.
Laganas
Laganas is the liveliest seaside resort of Zakynthos, ideal for those who wish to combine relaxation with activity. The long sandy beach offers comfort, organized facilities, and a variety of water activities. At one end lie the protected nesting areas of the Caretta caretta turtles in Kalamaki, while at the other end, Cameo Island, connected to Zakynthos by a wooden bridge, creates the feeling of a small tropical paradise.
